Hotel Directions
Getting to Sonamarg involves traveling by road since this mountain retreat does not have its own airport or railway station. All journeys begin at Srinagar, the entry point into Kashmir and also its capital city. The closest air link is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport located in Srinagar with an acronym SXR. Upon arrival at the airport, most people prefer taking a pre-arranged private taxi or SUV straight to Sheen Woods Resort where they will be staying. It is about 80 kilometers away and it takes between 3 to 4 hours depending on how busy the roads are.
The journey from Srinagar to Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1) is scenic, following the Sindh River through beautiful valleys and quaint villages. It is very important to have a skilled local driver who knows mountain driving. The last stretch to the resort usually means walking across a small footbridge over the river from where the main road is; this is where your driver will leave you. Make sure to talk with the resort about this last part if you are carrying heavy bags.
A shared taxi or local bus can be picked from Srinagar to Sonamarg by budget travelers but this will be much slow and uncomfortable. There is actually no direct public transport going up to the resort itself. If driving one’s own vehicle here should expect challenging mountain condition parking is generally found along the main road near to access point of the resort. Due to heavy snowfall in the area, the road leading into Sonamarg is closed during the winter months; mostly it runs from December through April.
